Ana Carolina Lourenço brings ICCI’s perspective to Democracy and Climate debates in Rio
This week in Rio de Janeiro, Ana Carolina Lourenço, Program Director at ICCI, took part in two inspiring conversations about democracy and climate.
On August 26, she spoke at the panel “Climate Democracy in the Age of Disinformation” held at UERJ. The discussion was part of “The Escazú Moment: From Vision to Victory in Environmental and Democratic Protection”, organized by Fundación Ciudadanía Inteligente with support from The Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change (OIMC) and Plataforma CIPÓ.
Carol not only shared insights on ICCI’s role but also spoke about the impact of disinformation on society’s relationship with climate policies. She pointed out how strategic communications approaches can help strengthen democratic processes tied to the climate agenda. She also emphasized that reliable information is critical for effective climate policy.
One day later, at the Museum of Tomorrow, she took the stage for the “South of the Future” panel during World Climate Sessions, part of Rio Climate Week.
The panel highlighted that leaders from the Global South are already shaping the future of climate action. It also emphasized the power of amplifying stories and concrete practices, linking local experiences to the global agenda, and positioning the Global South not just as a responder but as a driver of new paradigms for climate justice.
Speaking on the panel, Carol shared ICCI’s view on the central role of communication and culture in advancing the climate and democracy agendas, and explained how this works in practice. She highlighted how ICCI aligns global philanthropy agendas with local realities in Brazil and Latin America, and reflected on how international organizations can help strengthen solutions already emerging from the Global South.
The panel also featured Fabrícia Sterce (Visão Coop) and Maria Clara Salvador (Brazilian Center for Climate Justice), with moderation by Iago Hairon (Open Society Foundations).
